Marital/Couples Conflict
My speciality. According to the research of relationship experts Drs. John & Julie Gottman, married people and couples will experience six years of unhappiness in their relationship before seeking counseling. While no marriage/relationship is guaranteed to be successful, it guaranteed that improvements will not be accomplished without action. If you and your spouse/partner are experiencing difficulties in your relationship and desire change, do not wait to seek help! I have experience working with couples facing a variety of challenges including affair recovery, parenting, intimacy, communication, and conflict management. I encourage couples not to think of couples counseling as an indication of failure, but rather as an indication of desire to do and be better together.
Life Transitions, Stress, & Trauma
The only constant in life is change. Humans in today's world are asked to constantly adapt to changing political, professional, personal, and societal circumstances. If you find yourself feeling that you simply cannot keep up with the changes in your life, I may be able to help! I work with clients to better respond to and cope with stress through a strength-based approach that encourages clients to adopt and operate in the belief that "While the world around me may be stressful, I am confident that I can be resilient and overcome any challenges that come my way."
Anxiety
Contrary to popular belief, not all anxiety is bad. Anxiety is an inherent human trait that serves the purpose of protection and self-preservation. While anxiety always has positive intentions, its impacts can also be quite harmful. People who struggle with anxiety may experience frequent patterns of worry and/or fear related to topics such as personal health, sense of control over events of the world, professional success, relationships, and more. Anxiety can do damage to our well-being when it causes us to avoid potentially enjoyable situations, diminish our self-esteem, and fear that which does not need to be feared. With anxiety, the more you resist, the more it persists. I strive to help clients reduce and better manage anxiety through interventions and techniques focused on healthy appraisals of and responses to anxiety-producing situations.
Depression
Is depression a hereditary neurological mental illness? Or is it learned and developed through lived experiences? Regardless of its origin, people living with depression may have increased experience of sadness, diminished motivation to engage in enjoyable things, fatigue, changes in mood, difficulty sleeping, impaired concentration, isolation from others, low self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness, and more. If you are struggling with these symptoms, then counseling may be able to help. I work with clients with depression by helping them learn how thoughts and cognitive patterns, emotional responses, and behavioral responses can elevate and maintain depression. From there, clients can learn how making changes in thinking and behaving can can reduce depression and improve well-being.
Relationships
Much can be said about a person's wellness through examination of that person's relationships with others. Relationships can be our biggest source of joy and also our biggest source of stress. If you find that the relationships in your life are a cause of stress, I may be able to help! I work with clients to help improve relationships through helping them identify their attachment styles, desired relational values, and behaviors that are consistent with those values.
